Fred Hampton, member of the NAACP and a leader in the Black Panther Party. Hampton was extremely successful in organizing charities and rallies in Chicago. He worked to provide food for the needy, medical attention for the sick, and helped stop gang violence in his city. Hampton did all of this at a young age, before he was murdered during a police raid on his apartment in 1969. He was 21 years old when he was shot point blank while he slept. Jesse Jackson said of the event, “When Fred was shot in Chicago, black people in particular, and decent people everywhere, bled everywhere.”.
